VLAN and Switch Configuration Lab

Problem: Laptop should be connecting to server via 10.67.83.35/27 IP address through VLAN 10.

Steps taken:

  1. Make sure laptop is on and connecting to the AP
  2. Check IP config and sees the address 169.254.33.149/16 meaning laptop can communicate with other local machines but not the internet.
  3. Next check Switch 3 to see if VLAN 10 is enabled by using command show vlan brief.
  4. If VLAN is up then move on to switch 1 and 2.
  5. In switch 1 there is only VLAN 1 so VLAN 10 must be created in order for the switch to communicate with the server.
  6. To create VLAN 10 first enter command config t to configure the switch, next enter int fa 0/1 to configure port fa 0/1. Enter in switchport mode access to configure the port, next hit sw and finally enter swtichport access vlan 10 and this will create vlan 10 on port fa 0/1.
  7. Check switch 2 to see if vlan 10 exists, if not use the show int trunk command first in the CLI to ensure the system is trunking. If system is trunking enter command config t and instead of accessing a switch port just create vlan 10 using the vlan 10 command. Since the system is trunked it’ll add that vlan to the system without the need of specifying the access port.
  8. Once that is all done go back to your laptop and check the config section of your laptop. Your DHCP should give an IP address to your laptop.
  9. Go to Desktop and go to the terminal and go on the web browser, enter in the server IP of 10.67.83.35 and that should load the webpage.

Goals accomplished:

  1. Checked basic issues first such as ensuring the laptop was on and that server and laptop had the correct DHCP setting.
  2. Checked the switches to see if VLAN 10 existed in each of them.
  3. Created VLAN 10 on switches 1 and 2 using the config t, switchport and vlan commands.
  4. Reviewed the laptop settings to ensure connection to IP.
  5. Tested connection to web server by accessing the server IP on web browser.
